The Winner's Curse

The Winner's Curse

Should you read it?: Yes
Category: Young Adult

This is the first book in a series and this one just came out in March 2014, so the rest of the series has not even been released. I wish I'd known that before I started it, because I am just dying to pick up the next book now!! I'm going to copy the summary from Amazon: "As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions. One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin. But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined."

Things I liked:
I love that Kestrel is a strong female lead character, but that she also has her challenges. She is better at strategy and wit than she is at strength and skill. I enjoyed the way she interacted with the world around her.

I enjoyed the world the book takes place in. The Herrani and Valorians had been at war and now the Valorians are in leadership and the Herrani are slaves. It was interesting and different than I had read before. It's not dystopian, more just fantasy, but it was really unique.

I don't always call attention to this, but what a beautiful cover!! I just loved looking at this one.

Things I didn't:
I don't like that I have to wait like a year for the next book. That's for sure.

Overall: Another great series to add to my list!!
