After I Do

After I Do
by: Taylor Jenkins Reid

Should you read it?: Yes
Category: Adult

From Amazon: When Lauren and Ryan’s marriage reaches the breaking point, they come up with an unconventional plan. They decide to take a year off in the hopes of finding a way to fall in love again. One year apart, and only one rule: they cannot contact each other. Aside from that, anything goes.

Lauren embarks on a journey of self-discovery, quickly finding that her friends and family have their own ideas about the meaning of marriage. These influences, as well as her own healing process and the challenges of living apart from Ryan, begin to change Lauren’s ideas about monogamy and marriage. She starts to question: When you can have romance without loyalty and commitment without marriage, when love and lust are no longer tied together, what do you value? What are you willing to fight for?

Things I liked:
Gosh, I liked pretty much everything about this book. I've had to really think for a while before even writing this to determine what it was I wanted to talk about! I think the first thing I liked was the honesty. There were so many things that happened where I was thinking, "Oh my gosh I've had that fight!!" While they have definitely taken things to a degree that I have never experienced, I'm sure someone has been there. I had definitely been there for enough that I don't know that I've ever related to a book to that degree.

I loved the emails in the books. You'll know when you read it, but just the honesty again there was so great.

I loved the way they didn't wrap it up in some perfect, beautiful way. It was real. I don't feel like I'm giving away anything there. I just will say that I felt the entire book was raw, but also had so many take-aways. As weird as it sounds, I feel like I actually learned some stuff that I can apply to my relationship. I just don't even feel like I'm putting good words to this. It was so good.

Things I didn't:
I obviously don't condone taking a 1 year break from your marriage, but that being said, it's fiction people! I could get on board for the purposes of taking away wisdom for my own marriage.

Overall: If you are married, have ever been married, ever want to be married, read it.
